Chairman’s Statement of ASEAN-Canada Special Summit on Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience

  1. The ASEAN-Canada Special Summit on Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, on 10 October 2024. The Summit was chaired by H.E. Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The Summit was attended by the ASEAN Member States, the Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, as well as Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste as Observer. The Secretary-General of ASEAN was also in attendance.

We reiterated our support for the Lao PDR’s ASEAN Chairmanship under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,” which aims to enhance ASEAN connectivity and resilience through intensifying ASEAN cooperation under the three Community pillars; promoting infrastructure connectivity, narrowing development gaps, promoting greater economic integration and people-to-people exchanges; and further strengthening ASEAN’s relations with external partners, while maintaining ASEAN’s relevance and ASEAN Centrality in the evolving regional architecture. In this regard, we adopted the ASEAN-Canada Joint Leaders’ Statement on Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience. We congratulated the Lao PDR on the successful convening of the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings, from 24 to 27 July 2024, in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
